Setup and Launch

Stand in a circle with an open space in the center. One player steps into the center and begins telling a short true story from their life — something specific and personal, not a summary. Everyone else listens actively, tracking whatever associations the story sparks in them.

Flow

  • The player in the center tells their story and brings it to a natural pause.
  • The moment someone in the circle feels a genuine association — a memory, an image, a feeling triggered by what they just heard — they step in, gently tap the current storyteller out, and begin their own short story.
  • The chain continues by the same principle: you enter not by turn or obligation, but because something in the previous story lit up a real connection in you.
  • The result is a living relay of memories where themes drift and evolve through association. One story about a childhood kitchen might lead to a story about a grandmother, then to a story about baking, then to a story about a fire alarm.

Key rules

  • Keep stories short and specific: one episode, one focus, no lengthy backstory.

  • Stepping in is driven by association, not rotation — only enter when something genuinely resonates.

  • Replace the storyteller at a natural pause so their thought isn't cut off mid-sentence.

  • Maintain the thematic thread: your story can go somewhere new, but the link to the previous one should be clear to the audience.
