Setup and Launch
Bring 2β3 performers on stage. Ask the audience for a short suggestion (location, relationship, or object β one is enough). Explain that on your command "Plot", "Emotions" or "Detail", performers must immediately shift their focus without cancelling what has already been offered.
Agree on a clear switching signal: a voiced command, clap, or bell. Emphasise: at any given moment only one focus is active; the scene is short (2β3 minutes); the goal is clarity and development, not speed for its own sake.
How It Goes
The coach listens to the scene and manages focus, strengthening weak spots and maintaining rhythm. Switch no more than once every 5β15 seconds so performers have time to explore the focus.
-
Scene start. Let performers begin naturally, then quickly designate the first focus to set the frame and pace.
-
"Plot". On this command, performers move the action forward: make decisions, raise stakes, show consequences; time and location shifts are allowed if they serve the story's progress.
-
"Emotions". Performers express feelings through body, voice and words, connecting them to the partner and the situation; they clarify the relationship and react to the latest turn, rather than commenting on themselves from the outside.
-
"Detail". Increase specificity: an object, gesture, sound, taste, element of the environment. The detail must come back and affect what's happening β use it in actions and lines.
-
Switches and rhythm. Change focus as needed: if the plot is stalling β "Emotions" or "Detail"; if stuck in feeling β bring back "Plot". Ensure the switch is unambiguous and heard by everyone.
-
Conclusion. End the scene at a strong change or clear button (laughter, revelation, completed action). Mark the ending with the same signal.
Maintain balance: throughout the scene each focus should sound at least once. If there are many performers, run scenes in rotations of 2β3, keeping the same signals and rules.
Key rules
Give only one focus at a time and hold the pause for 5β15 seconds so performers can explore it; too-frequent switches break cause-and-effect.
On "Plot", stop past-tense explanations: demand actions and decisions "here and now" so the story actually moves.
On "Emotions", ensure the feeling is directed at the partner and the situation; avoid self-commentary and abstract declarations.
On "Detail", encourage specifics that come back and affect the scene; don't allow accumulation of useless encyclopaedia facts.
The switching signal must be loud and unambiguous; if someone didn't hear it, repeat immediately so the whole ensemble works from the same focus.
